Coconut oil whitens teeth while also killing harmful microbes like bacteria, yeast, and viruses. Baking soda is used as an ingredient within toothpaste and also as a toothpaste alternative. Baking soda is less harsh than synthetic ingredients and is better for sensitive teeth. Baking soda also maintain the pH balance in the mouth.

In many toothpastes, an ingredient called SLS is used which commonly causes irritation and mouth sores. Some toothpastes are labeled SLS-free to avoid these negative effects.

Details

Baking soda is the key base ingredient in toothpaste. Toothpaste primarily works by using abrasives for scrubbing action to mechanically clean teeth. Baking soda is a low-intensity abrasive which doesn’t significantly damage teeth with each use. It also neutralizes acids by increasing the pH in the mouth to begin remineralization which is the process that repairs teeth. Remineralization fixes early-stage cavities known as incipient lesions. Baking soda also reduces gingival bleeding in the gums.

Coconut oil is antimicrobial and kills harmful bacteria and viruses. It also whitens teeth in a process known as oil pulling, and it soothes pain by acting as an anti-inflammatory.

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) is a chemical derived from coconut or palm oil. It is a corrosive irritant used as a wetting agent and detergent. It increases the cleaning power of toothpaste. It is also able to strip away layers of teeth.
